Consumer Information

Consumer Information: This section is being updated regularly.

Hiring anyone to perform contracting work for over $500 in the state of California requires a contractors license. If you hire someone without a license, you are putting yourself at great risk both from the work being performed, as well as financial liability. Those accepting work are committing a crime in the state of California and are subject to prosecution. This web site will allow you to find a contractor, inspect their license and insurance credentials. The information on this site is submitted by a contractor, and must be verified by you for your protection. The first step is to find a contractor on this site. Next use the California License Check box on the right side of the page to check the California State License Board (CSLB) records. If information on this site is different from the official CSLB web site, do not use the contractor. Most important is that the license number, the name of the business/contractor, and address match up properly. After that, verify the license is current and the classification covers the work you need performed. All contractors in CA are required to have a bond. All contractors in CA that have employees are required to have workers compensation insurance (to protect you and the employee). Liability insurance is optional in CA, but provides an added level of protection for both the consumer and contractor. Verify information on the CSLB web site. Liability insurance can be verified by calling the insurance agent listed in the contractor's listing. Once you start identifying possible contractors, you can save them to your own personal "favorites" section in your account. In addition, there is a facility to contact any contractor through this web site to facilitate communication. This makes it very easy for you to find a list of contractors, have some information exchange, and then finally contact them directly if you wish. There is no cost to you as a consumer, your information is not shared with anyone, and only contractors that you contact will communicate with you. This is in contrast to a myriad of "lead generation" web sites where you fill out forms, and then get bombarded with contractors calling you. All exchanges are initiated by you.

Can someone borrow a license from another contractor ? No ! Just like you can't lend your drivers license to someone, you can't lend your contractors license. Here is an excerpt from a recent CSLB press release:

Unlicensed tile worker Sergey Sitkin and his brother, Andrei Sitkin, an unlicensed painter, are suspected of contracting without a license, illegal advertising, and using the contractor license number of an Agoura Hills man whose license was cancelled upon his death in 1993. California Business & Professions (B&P) Code carries penalties of up to $10,000 and up to one year in jail for willful and intentional use of a contractor license number that does not correspond to a number on a current, valid license held by that individual.
